WHAT WE DO

Wow With Lighting exists to close one specific gap. Most lighting content online tells you how a room should feel. Almost none of it tells you what to actually buy, what the numbers on the box mean, or what happens when you open the junction box on a Saturday morning.

We publish buying guides, comparisons, product research, installation and wiring walkthroughs, troubleshooting fixes, and room-by-room lighting ideas. Every guide is built around the specifications that decide whether a fixture works in your space: lumens, colour temperature in Kelvin, colour rendering index, ingress protection rating, voltage, and dimmer compatibility.

WHY WE STARTED

This site started out of frustration with the way lighting is sold and the way it is written about. Two identical-looking pendant lights can behave completely differently in the same kitchen, and nothing on the product page explains why. One is 2700K and the other is 4000K. One renders colour at 90 CRI and the other does not publish a CRI figure at all. One will flicker on the dimmer you already own and the other will not.

Meanwhile the advice available to homeowners tended to fall into two camps. Decor content that described a mood but never mentioned a number. Or trade and electrician forums that were technically accurate but written for people who already knew the vocabulary.

We built Wow With Lighting to sit in between: technical enough to be genuinely useful, plain enough to be read by someone standing in a hardware aisle on their phone. If a guide here does not help you make a decision, it has failed at its only job.

WHAT WE COVER

• INDOOR FIXTURES. Ceiling fans with light kits, chandeliers, pendants and shades, wall sconces, flush and semi-flush mounts, recessed and track lighting, floor and table lamps.
• OUTDOOR AND LANDSCAPE. Solar deck and path lights, low-voltage garden systems and transformers, step and hardscape lighting, flood and security lighting, string and festoon.
• INSTALLATION, WIRING AND FIXES. Fixture swaps, transformer sizing and voltage drop, switches and dimmer compatibility, wet and damp location requirements, and the flicker, buzz and dimming faults that come up most often.

HOW WE RESEARCH

We want to be completely direct about this, because a lot of sites in this space are not.

What we actually do:

• MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS. We pull published figures directly from the manufacturer: lumen output, correlated colour temperature, colour rendering index, ingress protection rating, operating voltage, materials, dimensions, and certifications.
• PUBLISHED DOCUMENTATION. Installation manuals, wiring diagrams, safety listings, wet and damp location ratings, warranty terms, and published dimmer compatibility charts.
• VERIFIED OWNER REVIEWS. We read verified-purchase reviews in volume and look for the same complaint or the same praise repeating across many buyers. A single angry review proves nothing. Two hundred people reporting the same failure at eighteen months is a finding.
• CROSS-COMPARISON. We compare competing products against the same criteria rather than reviewing each one in isolation, so a recommendation always means “better than these alternatives for this specific job”.
• GAPS STAY GAPS. When a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we write that the figure is not published. We do not estimate it, infer it, or quietly leave it out to make a product look better than the evidence supports.

WHERE DIY STOPS

A meaningful share of what we publish involves mains electricity. We treat that seriously. Our installation and wiring guides state plainly where a job crosses from reasonable homeowner work into licensed electrician territory, and we would rather lose a click than have a reader attempt something they should not.
